We all have our semi-secret, less-known personal favorites — a great B-side, an early work by an artist that later became famous, an obscure (but delicious) family recipe. Share one of your unsung heroes with us — how did you discover it? Why has it stayed off everyone’s radar?
Some things are really underrated, or taken for granted. These come to mind for me:
People who have been to Britain always joke about fish and chips as being a dull staple of the British diet, but fish and chips done well are a real treat. I can’t think of a meal I like much better — not the ones wrapped in newspaper with soggy chips, but done in a restaurant so that they’re hot and crispy.
I’ve spoken of my PB&J addiction before, but I can’t think of anything I prefer for lunch. It’s also good for you especially on sprouted wheat bread — as good as a ham an cheese sandwich for sure. (Or leftovers — my husband eats those.) I think some people think of PB&J as kid food; they don’t know what they’re missing.
I’m always amazed when I listen to classical music how really good it is; I forget how complex and structured it is compared to the music that is generally popular — and there are several contemporary artists I enjoy as well as oldies from my high school and college days. I can’t help but think, though, that the talent shared by those classical composers was a special gift from God. Bach, Beethoven, Pachelbel and others — their music takes you to a whole different dimension.
In contrast, I remember the first time I heard “No Such Thing (as the real world)”, by John Mayer, I knew he had a unique point of view and real talent. I was hooked on him before he hit the big time — and preferred it when he was “my” discovery.
Silence: it’s one of the most undervalued and unrated things in our society and our personal lives. So much conspires to keep us connected — when sometimes the person we need to connect with the most is ourselves. Often when I’m alone in my car, I turn off the talk radio or a CD I like, and just let the quiet seep into me. It’s good to be stimulus free at times, and to let our minds float free, or work on problems, or solutions, or just notice what happen on around us.
