Possibility. Opportunity. Potential. As another year gets underway, let’s celebrate the new.

I’ve shared before that I’m in Alcoholics Anonymous — over 20 years now — and one of the concepts I’m still struggling with is “staying in the moment”, living each day that’s given to me as well as I can.

I think it’s good to have goals, but I don’t want them to interfere with my concentrating on the present, and doing my best each and every day. I also like the slogan, “Do the next right thing.” For me this is a Godsend because I also have ADD and generalized anxiety disorder, and staying in the moment is often an act of will and determination — and I’m getting better. That slogan often helps me out because even in my muddled brain I can sort out which is the next right, or most important thing to do (even if it’s not the thing I want to do most). I can talk myself out of almost anything, and put off 10 tasks a day, then feel regret that I didn’t do what I should have done, or end up with 10 unfinished tasks.

Every day presents new opportunities, possibilities, and potential, but following the Nike directive “Just Do It!” is how you realize those goals. I have learned that nothing gets done just by thinking about it. I remind myself of that every day, so my goal is always simple: Finish one task a day that I start, and do it to the best of my ability.
