Imagine that tomorrow, all of your duties and obligations evaporate for the day. You get the day all to yourself, to do anything you please. What types of fun activities would make your day?

You’ve put me on the spot. I don’t know what I would do. Shopping, no. Odd for a woman, but I don’t like to shop much. I do it when I have to, and then try to make several choices so I don’t have to go back again too soon!

There’s something I haven’t done in many, many years — too long: going to a Shakespearean play. I used to love those plays in my high school and college days, and had plenty of friends who enjoyed them too. I’d like to relive the enjoyment they gave me, and re-experience the Bard’s use of the English language, his wit, his one-liners, his well-known lines.

I love art, but I don’t spend enough time in museums. One of the best field trips I had with my fourth graders “way back when” was going to the National Gallery of Art on kind of a scavenger hunt. I decided that we would look at portrayals of children. We looked at some paintings online, learned something about the artists, and then went in search of those particular pieces. The kids had such a great time finding them — choosing the gallery (by date) where they should be, then looking for the painting. And what differences in artists portrayals we saw!

I’d like to do the same thing for myself: look through the website and remind myself what wonderful and exceptional pieces of art the gallery owns. Then I’d choose the ones I’d like to see and go looking for them. I get tiring walking around galleries and seeing only a few paintings I really love, then leaving after a few hours having missed something I have enjoyed seeing. What a benefit the internet is for a project like this!

I also love massages, but always feel guilty that I’m indulging myself too much — that I really ought to be doing something else. That would be another winner for a day on my own to do what I pleased.

The hardest thing I would find is allowing myself to do what I want. I tend to feel guilty if I do something that is “indulgent” and just for my pleasure. Don’t know why…
